WhatsApp backups now count as Google Drive storage; Find out how it affects you

WhatsApp ushered in 2024 with a bold step that many Android users didn't like. Starting this month, WhatsApp backups will count against your Google Drive storage, which means you should have enough space on your Google Drive. WhatsApp currently offers free Google Drive storage for WhatsApp backups on Android smartphones, but the freebie seems to have run its course. And this is not good news especially for those who have chunky WhatsApp backups. Learn about this major change.

WhatsApp backups on Google Drive

In November, Meta Platforms announced that it would soon stop allowing free Google storage for WhatsApp backups. In a blog post, the platform said, “WhatsApp backups on Android will soon start counting against your Google Account cloud storage limit, similar to how WhatsApp backups are handled on other mobile platforms.”

Meta said the change will begin to be reflected in December, with a wider rollout in early 2024, and now we're really seeing it. So, it looks like it's finally time to say goodbye to your free Google Drive storage!

What does this mean for consumers?

With this change, WhatsApp backups will now occupy a fraction of the 15GB storage space that Google offers with its free account. If you want more storage space, you'll need to subscribe to Google One, the company's subscription service that offers up to 2TB of storage. It is important to note that this change only affects Android users as WhatsApp does not have any free storage space on iOS devices.

If you are on WhatsApp stable version, go to Google account storage and look under 'Other' section. Here, you will find the storage space occupied by the WhatsApp backup. Interestingly, WhatsApp says that it will start notifying users about this change at least 30 days in advance through a banner. This can be seen by going into WhatsApp, then Chats, then Chat Backups.
