NASA wants to build a car that astronauts can drive on the moon: Full details of the project

NASA plans to develop a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) that will allow Artemis astronauts to travel around the lunar south polar region. The US Space Agency has selected three agencies to work on the development of a lunar vehicle. Of the three, NASA also selected the natural machines involved in the recent landing of the Odysseus spacecraft on the Moon. According to a NASA blog and a shared YouTube video, the space agency has partnered with three companies to provide their advanced technology for the development of the Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV). Companies include Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost and Venturi Astrolabe. The vehicle will reportedly provide astronauts with a mode of orbiting the moon for scientific research. Additionally, it will also help prepare human missions to Mars. The LTV will be used during the Artemis 5 mission, which is expected to launch in March 2030.

Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, said, “We look forward to the development of an Artemis-generation lunar exploration vehicle that will help us advance what we have learned on the Moon. This vehicle will greatly enhance our astronauts' ability to explore and conduct science on the lunar surface, while also serving as a science platform between crewed missions. NASA has highlighted that the project to develop the lunar vehicle will cost up to $4.6 billion. However, the cost is based on “indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity” only.

The LTV is expected to help astronauts explore the south pole of the Moon, transport scientific instruments and collect lunar surface samples for comprehensive study and research. Therefore, the vehicle will be developed with advanced technology to operate in extreme conditions. The LTV will “feature advanced technologies for power management, autonomous driving, and state-of-the-art communications and navigation systems,” NASA said.
