Earth has been affected by several celestial phenomena in the past few weeks. Along with the vernal equinox, peak 25 of the solar cycle is approaching, leading to increased solar activity. In addition, we also saw several asteroid approaches. While these space rocks do not pose the same risk as solar storms, they pass Earth so closely that it is imperative to monitor them to predict any potential collision scenarios. With its advanced technology, NASA has shed light on a 150-foot asteroid that is expected to fly past Earth today, March 27, by a narrow margin.

Asteroid 2024 EA3

Asteroid 2024 EA3 is one of millions of asteroids orbiting the Sun in the main meteor belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, according to NASA. The Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, or CNEOS, which monitors celestial objects like asteroids and comets, revealed that it will pass Earth at a distance of 3.14 million kilometers today.

It is traveling in its orbit around the Sun at a speed of about 38754 kilometers per hour, which is much faster than an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM)! It is one of two asteroids designated to pass Earth today, along with asteroid 2024 EL4.

Asteroid 2024 EA3 belongs to the Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids, which are space rocks that pass Earth with semi-axial axes larger than Earth. These asteroids are named after the massive 1862 Apollo asteroid discovered by German astronomer Carl Reinmuth in the 1930s.

How big is it?

In terms of size, NASA said the asteroid is about 150 feet across. Therefore, it can be compared to a large plane! It is not expected to actually impact the Earth's surface and cause any loss of life or property. However, it is still very close to the planet and is therefore designated as a Near Earth Asteroid (NEA).
