Microsoft Unbundles Office and Teams Worldwide | Tech Crunch

Microsoft Microsoft will introduce a new version of Microsoft 365 and the Office 365 subscription service that excludes Teams, unbundling the suite after scrutiny from a European Union regulator and complaints from rival Slack.

The move comes after Microsoft agreed last year to sell the Office 365 suite sans Microsoft Teams in the EU and Switzerland. The company introduced Teams in 2017 as a complementary offering to the Office 365 suite.

Microsoft took an unfair advantage by combining the two offerings, many businesses argued. Salesforce-owned Slack called the move “illegal,” accusing Microsoft of forcing users to install Teams through its market-dominating productivity suite and hiding the true cost of the chat and video service.

In a statement to Reuters, Microsoft said unbundling “also addresses feedback from the European Commission by providing more flexibility to multinational companies when they want to standardize their purchasing across geographies.”

Microsoft will introduce new Office 365 lineups on Monday, Reuters reported. Microsoft had not implemented the change at the time of publication.
