Apple's Next Big Plan After Dumping the Apple Car? Personal robots that follow you

Spread the love

For more than a decade, Apple has had ambitions to outdo Tesla and other manufacturers in the automotive industry with its vehicle, popularly known as the Apple Car. It aims to provide a fully autonomous experience by taking the user to their destination without the need for any human intervention, something Tesla does not offer with its fully self-driving (FSD). However, a few weeks ago, the iPhone maker shocked everyone by completely canceling the project. This has many wondering about the next big source of revenue for the company, which is set to end 2023 as the world's top smartphone maker.

But in the past few weeks, details have emerged about a number of interesting Apple projects, including touchscreen Macs, foldable iPads and AirPods with AI. Now, another Apple project has come to light – personal robots.

Apple and personal robots

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple engineers are exploring plans for a personal and mobile robot that follows the user around their home. While plans are still in the early stages, Apple has already developed a tabletop that uses robotics to move the display.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Gurman said that while the tablet is in a more advanced stage of development, it has been added and removed from Apple's roadmap over the years, indicating uncertainty over its future public availability.

Development of the personal robotics project is led by John Giannandrea, senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy, in collaboration with its engineering department. Matt Costello and Brian Lynch are two other Apple executives involved in the project, who currently oversee the company's home products.

The news claims that Apple's future strategy revolves around three projects: automotive, home and mixed reality. Apple has already launched Vision Pro as part of its mixed-reality initiative, although the automotive project has already been scrapped. And if reports are anything to go by, it could be a step forward when it comes to home projects as well. But will it be in the form of a personal robot or something else? That is still unclear.
